Cannabis Dating Etiquette: 12 Rules for 420 Dates

By Dawn Weir 5 min read

Good cannabis dating etiquette is really just good manners with a 420 twist. Whether you are meeting a fellow enthusiast, a casual weekend user or someone who does not partake at all, a little consideration goes a long way. Follow these simple rules and you will be the date people talk about in the best way. As always: adults 21 and over only, and only where cannabis is legal.

Cannabis dating etiquette before the date

1. Be upfront about where you stand

Mention your relationship with cannabis early, on your profile or in early chats. A light "I enjoy cannabis now and then, where it's legal. How about you?" saves everybody time.

2. Ask before you assume

Never assume your date is cool with it, even if you met through a 420-friendly event or a cannabis-friendly app. Some people are 420-friendly but do not use. Some only use CBD. Some do not want it on a first date. Ask.

3. Show up clear-headed for a first date

Unless you have both clearly agreed to a cannabis-friendly date, arrive sober. You want your date to meet the real you, and you want to remember the conversation.

Sharing etiquette

4. Offer, never push

If you are somewhere legal and private and you are both into it, offering is polite. Pushing is not. "Want some? Totally fine if not" is the right tone. Accept a no the first time, with zero commentary.

5. Start low and go slow, especially with guests

If your date is newer to cannabis, or trying something unfamiliar, keep it light. With edibles, wait before having more. Everyone's tolerance is different, and nobody wants a date that ends with someone feeling awful. This is not medical advice; if anyone has health questions, they should talk with a doctor.

6. Be a good host

If you are hosting, have water and snacks on hand, keep the space comfortable, and make sure there are good options for anyone not partaking. Classic sharing manners apply too: do not hog it, and pass it along.

Safety and law, the non-negotiables

7. Never drive high

Not a little. Not "I feel fine." Plan rides before anything starts: rideshares, a sober friend or a date where nobody needs to leave. And never let your date get into a car with someone who is impaired.

8. Follow the law and the venue's rules

Many places that allow cannabis still ban using it in public, and hotels, rentals and venues have their own rules. Know them before you go, and respect them. Getting a ticket is nobody's idea of romance.

9. Consent matters even more when anyone is altered

If either of you is noticeably high, slow things down. Physical intimacy needs a clear, enthusiastic yes from both people, and that is harder to give or read when someone is impaired. When in doubt, wait for another day.

Respect for non-users

10. Make the date work for them too

If your date does not partake, do not make cannabis the center of the evening. Pick an activity that is fun either way. If you want to use, ask first, step away from them, and keep the smell out of their clothes and car.

11. Skip the jokes and the pressure

No teasing, no "you should try it," no eye-rolling. Their choice is their business, and respecting it is attractive.

The big one

12. Remember the date is about the person

Cannabis can be part of a great date, but it is not the point of one. Ask good questions. Listen to the answers. Put your phone away. Give a sincere, specific compliment about something they chose: their style, their taste in music, the way they tell a story. Those are the moments people remember. Years from now, nobody will recall exactly what was in the jar. They will remember how you made them feel.

That compliment habit is the heart of what Dawn teaches at the start of every speed dating night. You can read about the method on our learn how to date page.
